IV. SCHOLARSHIPS, FINANCIAL GRANTS AND DISCOUNTS

Scholarships and financial grants/ discounts may be awarded to any officially enrolled student in a regular semester who meets the criteria as provided by existing school policies and guidelines. All applications for the Validation of NWU Scholarship Grants, Financial Grants and Discounts shall be filed at the Registrar’s Office, through the Scholarship Coordinator.
A student is awarded the scholarship grant, financial grant or discount, upon approval by the President.

Scholarship Grants

1. Institutional Scholarships
a. Entrance Scholarships
A student who graduated from Senior High School with any of the following academic honors: “With Highest Honors”, “With High Honors” or “With Honors” occupying ranks 1, 2, 3, 4 in the entire graduating class of any public or private Senior High School recognized by the Department of Education and enrolls in any of the academic programs offered at Northwestern University, shall be granted tuition fee discounts provided that the graduating class is not less than 45 students. Tuition discount shall be computed using the rates given below based on tuition fees assessed by the Accounts Office.

A Certificate of Academic Honor and Good Moral Character Certificate must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office and the Dean of the College where he is admitted.
Moreover, an entrance scholar who maintains the required academic rating shall be considered academic scholar; thereby subjecting him to the provisions under the title “Academic Scholarship”.
Entrance scholarship can only be availed during the first semester. An entrance scholar who maintains the required academic rating for the preceding semester may be considered for academic scholarship.

b. Academic Scholarships
A scholarship grant extended to a student who shall obtain a general weighted average (GWA) within the range of 1.0 to 1.75. An academic scholar shall be approved by the President upon the recommendation and certification of the Dean concerned and the Registrar, respectively.
University Scholar. Full tuition fee (100%) discount is granted to a student who obtains a weighted average of 1.0 to 1.25 at the end of a semester, provided that he/she does not have grade lower than 1.75 in any professional subject. He/she must be a regular student.
College Scholar. Half tuition fee (50%) discount is granted to a student who obtains weighted average of 1.26 to 1.75 at the end of a semester, provided that he/she does not have grade lower than 2.0 in any professional subject. He/she must be a regular student.
Academic scholars are given Certificate of Merit during an Awarding Ceremony or Recognition Program. Tuition fee discounts are credited to deserving student’s accounts on the next semester of his/her enrollment.
An academic scholar who maintains the required academic rating at the end of the semester shall continue to avail of the scholarship, provided that it must be certified by the Registrar and approved by the President. The University shall maintain not more than 200 academic scholars in one semester. The University also exercise its right to adjust the semestral cap for academic scholars within reasonable grounds and with prior consent to the studentry,
The Scholarship and Grants Committee shall make recommendations for approval of the President regarding academic scholarships for every semester.

c. Presidential Scholarship
This scholarship is open to the first ten (10) College Freshmen applicants who shall enroll in academic programs selected by the Executive Committee. The applicant’s Grade 12 Senior High School General Weighted Average must not be lower than 85%, and must obtain a score of 60% in the Diagnostic Test in Englishand Match. To maintain this scholarship in succeeding semesters, the student should have a GWA of 1.75 or higher (including NSTP, PE and Euthenics), with no grade lower than 2.0 in the professional subjects, no Incomplete, Dropped or Failed marks.
The student-scholar must not have any derogatory record in the Guidance Center or Students Affairs Office.
Presidential scholars shall enjoy free semestral tuition and miscellaneous fees, plus P12,000.00 financial assistance for CPA Board Examination (for B S Accountancy students) and P12,000.00 financial assistance during internship (for Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science and B S Physical Therapy students.)

d. Northwestern University Alumni Association Scholarships
The purpose of this scholarship program is to provide assistance to deserving, qualified children of NWU Alumni. It is a project of Northwestern University Alumni Association. Recipients are given full scholarship based on semestral tuition and miscellaneous fees.
To qualify, the applicant should submit a fully accomplished application for Validation of NWU Scholarship /Financial Grant and Discount, together with their parent’s Income Tax Return or a certification from their Punong Barangay that they belong to the low-income group. A College Freshman applicant must obtain a score of 60% in the Diagnostic Test for English and Mathematics.
A Scholarship Committee validates the qualification and approves or disapproves the scholarship grant based on the set criteria. Successful applicants are informed through a letter sent by the Alumni Director, after which, they shall be screened further through an interview.
The Alumni Scholarship Grant shall continue to be enjoyed by the student until he /she graduates provided he shall never incur any failing grade, dropped marks or incomplete marks.

e. Educational Assistance for Stockholders and/or their beneficiaries
This Scholarship Program is awarded to any student who is a NWU stockholder or relative of a NWU stockholder related within the 3rd degree of consanguinity. Applicant should submit a fully accomplished application for Validation of NWU Scholarship/Financial Grant, Financial Discount with an attached PSA Birth Certificate. To continually avail of the program, the recipient must not have obtained failing grades or dropped marks in the previous semester and mustmaintain a General Weighted Average of not lower than 2.5 to enjoy a 50% tuition fee discount.

2. Government-sponsored Scholarships
CHED –administered scholarship program (Reference: List of available Student Financial Assistance Programs (StuFAPS) https://ched.gov.ph)

a. State Scholarship Program (SSP)
Full scholarship (FS) for High School Graduates: Financial benefit per Academic Year is P 30,000.00
GWA must be at least 90% or its equivalent

b. Private Education Student Financial Assistant (PESFA) Scholarships (PS)
For high school graduates: Financial benefit per academic year is P 15,000.00
GWA must be at least 85%.

c. Grants-in-Aid (GIA)
Tulong Dunong (TD) for —
1) High School graduates: Financial benefit per academic year is P 6,000.00
GWA is at least a passing grade.
2) Students with earned units in college: Financial benefit per academic year is P 15,000.00.
3) Students who passed the Alternative Learning System (ALS) and Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT): Financial benefit is based on tuition and other fees of HEI.

3. Other Government-Sponsored Scholarships

a. PD# 577 AFP Dependent Scholarship

By virtue of PD No. 577, dependents of military personnel who die or become incapacitated in line of duty are exempted from the payment of tuition and matriculation fees. The University will accommodate one scholar for the first 2000 students and additional one for the next 1000 students enrolled during each term.

b. Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Scholarship
c. US Department of Veterans Affairs Educational Benefit Program
d. Philippine Veterans Affairs Educational Benefit Program
e. National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Scholarship Program

4. Sponsored Scholarship Programs by Private Individuals and Companies

a. Erlinda M. Gloria Scholarship Program (former NWU Stockholder/ Director)
b. SEEDS Program by Jollibee/Chowking/Greenwich

Financial Grants and Discount Privileges

Financial grants refer to financial arrangements for a reduction of tuition usually as members of a university-accredited special skills group, talent or interest group, stated as a percentage of total tuition, based on student’s special skills or talent, like music, dance, theater arts, athletics, or literary.

  1. SAGUDAY PERFORMING ARTS GROUP
    Members of the Saguday Performing Arts group, upon the recommendation of the adviser/trainer, shall enjoy the following discounts based of the length of membership and performance.
Four years100%
Three years75%
Two years50%
One year35%

However, the adviser or coach may recommend for an increase of discount as to exemplary performance, discipline, and leadership, but subject to the evaluation of the Cultural Affairs Coordinator and the Dean of Student Affairs, and approval of the VPAA and the University President.
The privilege is good for a particular semester and may be renewed for the coming semester. No student may avail of more than one scholarship grant arising from the same source during a particular semester.
Members of the NWU Saguday Marching Band and NWU Saguday After 5 Band are exempted in their ROTC and/or NSTP classes.
The tuition fee discounts for new band/combo members, athletes and cultural troupe members shall be availed of on the following semester after the recommendation of the adviser or coach provided the grantees have not incurred a failing or dropped mark, and subject to the policy on attendance. A student who incurs an Incomplete (INC) mark, his/her scholarship shall be deferred pending completion of the requirements in passing the subject. Failure to complete INC marks within the next semester shall lead to the forfeiture of the privilege discount. Any repeated INC or failing mark shall be a ground for probation or suspension of the said member of Saguday Performing Arts Group.

2. EMPLOYEE DEPENDENT’S DISCOUNT
The following discounts are afforded the legitimate dependents of employees of the University:
a. Children of full time permanent employees enrolled in any level are given 100% tuition fee discount for every child but not exceeding three.
b. Children of casual/probationary employees are given 25% tuition fee discount and will be increased upon obtaining permanent status.
Provided that the employee’s child –beneficiary shall not incur any failing mark in any semester of availment of this discount.
3. SIBLING DISCOUNT

Students who are members of the same household i.e., legitimate brothers and/or sisters are given sibling discounts in this manner:
For two (2) students – 10% tuition fee discount for each member of the household
For three (3) or more – 20% tuition fee discount for each member of the household
Upon enrolment or before the preliminary examinations, the legitimate brothers and/or sisters or concerned must apply for the discount and should submit the following:

a. Copy of PSA-issued birth certificate of siblings;
b. Copy of registration form as proof of present enrollment;
c. Copy of University ID of each applicant; and
d. A barangay certification that the applicants are siblings/parent-child and residents of the said barangay.

Application for sibling discount shall be for every semester. Failure to submit the requirements within the prescribed period of 30 days from enrollment shall be deemed a waiver and cannot be made to apply retroactively. Sibling discounts are subject for the approval of the University President upon recommendation of the Scholarship Coordinator and the University Registrar.

4. Members of The Review, Official Publication of NWU
a. Editor-in-Chief 100%
b. Associate Editor/Managing Editor 75%
c. News, literary, feature editors and artist 25%

5. Employees’ Discounts

a. Full time permanent and probationary faculty members/employees are given 50% tuition fee discount when they enroll in any of the undergraduate, graduate –or-post-graduate programs.

b. The spouse of full-time permanent employees shall avail of a 25% tuition fee discount when he/she enrolls in any of the undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate programs.
Application for the tuition fee discount should be filed within the specified period to avoid forfeiture of the privilege. All scholarships/grants/discounts can only be availed of during a regular semester/trimester. Application for the discounts shall be submitted to the Office of the Registrar.
