12th Endemic Plant Species Discovered in Ilocos Norte

Researchers from Northwestern University and the National Museum of the Philippines have documented the 12th plant species endemic to Ilocos Norte, following the discovery of Paraphlomis aristata in Kalbario–Patapat Natural Park.

The study, published in the international journal Phytotaxa, describes the species as new to science and currently known only from a limited area within the protected park. Due to its restricted distribution and observed habitat threats, the species is provisionally classified as Critically Endangered.

The research team includes Michael Agbayani Calaramo, Head of Northwestern University’s Center for Biodiversity Conservation, Restoration Ecology, and Environmental Concerns (CBCREEC). CBCREEC focuses on biodiversity documentation, ecological restoration, conservation research, and the management of university-based ecological and botanical resources.

Reflecting on the discovery, Calaramo said, “The discovery of this new species reminds us of the richness of the Ilocos Region and how much Northwestern University has poured into understanding this ecological marvel of Northwestern Luzon. This scientific collaboration and discovery reflect the very soul of CBCREEC’s mission, which began with the establishment of the Botanic Gardens in 2006. Today, it serves as a refuge for the region’s unique biodiversity and for the future of the Ilocano people.”

The discovery adds to the growing record of plant species unique to Ilocos Norte and underscores the value of sustained field research and conservation work in the province.
