Scholarly Horizon Journal is the official undergraduate research publication of Northwestern University, Laoag City, Philippines. Scholarly Horizon Journal considers scholarly, research- based articles from undergraduate students across various disciplines, aimed at facilitating the exchange of empirical studies that contribue to academic discourse and professional practice. It is a peer-reviewed and Open Access journal that features original works from fields such as allied health sciences, international hospitality and tourism management, business education, and more. As a journal dedicated to amplifying undergraduate voices, contributions from diverse academic programs are encouraged to promote locally grounded and globally relevant knowledge.

Objectives

  1. To provide a publishing platform for undergraduate researchers from various fields.
  2. To give student scholars an opportunity to engage in the academic community, receive mentorship, and contribute to knowledge dissemination.
  3. To make student research papers and scholarly articles available free of cost to all users.

Aim

The Scholarly Horizon Journal seeks to establish itself as a reliable source of undergraduate scholarly articles and research papers. It promotes publication at affordable or no cost. This initiative ensures accessibility for student researchers with limited resources. All published articles will remain open access. The journal will also archive these works for the future generations of scholars.

Scope of Publication

The Scholarly Horizon Journal operates as a multi-disciplinary journal dedicated to undergraduate research. It encompasses a broad scope of publication. The journal welcomes original research articles, empirical studies, and related works in fields such as allied health sciences, arts, engineering, architecture, and other areas aligned with research, community, social development, and internationalization. Authors must submit complete, unpublished, and original works. These submissions must not be under consideration by any other journals.

Manuscript Submission Overview

Scholarly Horizon Journal has no restrictions on the length of manuscripts, provided that the text is concise and comprehensive. Full experimental details must be provided so that the results can be reproduced. Manuscripts submitted to Scholarly Horizon Journal should neither be published previously nor be under consideration for publication in another journal. The following type of research article will be considered:

  • Articles: Original research manuscripts from undergraduate students. The journal considers all original research manuscripts provided that the work reports scientifically sound experiments and provides a substantial amount of new information. Authors should not unnecessarily divide their work into several related manuscripts. Quality and impact of the study will be considered during peer review.

Submission Process

Manuscripts for Scholarly Horizon Journal should be submitted through the university’s designated submission portal or on-site at the University Center for Research and Development. The submitting author, who is generally the corresponding author, is responsible for the manuscript during the submission and peer-review process. The submitting author must ensure that all eligible co-authors have been included in the author list and that they have all read and approved the submitted version of the manuscript. All co-authors can see the manuscript details in the submission system, if they register and log in using the e-mail address provided during manuscript submission.

Proposed Publication Date

Scholarly Horizon Journal will be published annually, with its target date every month of September of the current year.

Manuscript Template

  • Title of the Manuscript
  • Names of the Author(s)
  • Abstract (150-200 words)
  • Keywords (5-10 words)
  • Introduction (includes background, problem and purpose of study: 1-2 double-space pages)
      • Literature Review (citing journals and books but more of journal articles, which should be at least 20 and 50% of which were published within the last 10 years: 3-6 double-space pages)
      • Theoretical Framework OR Conceptual Framework (1 double-space page)
      • Research Problems
      • Research Paradigm
  • Methodology (Please start with 1-2 introductory paragraphs)
      • Participants (Who are the respondents, Sampling technique, Calculation of the sample size, Sufficiency of the sample size)
      • Research Instrument (What is your research instrument? • Did you adapt a previous instrument? How did you measure the construct/s?)
      • Data Analysis (Research design, Statistical treatment)
      • Ethical Considerations (Discuss the specific ethical considerations of your study here).
  • Results (This part presents the key results of the study including statistical analyses. The flow should be based on the hypotheses and/or statement of the problem of the study. Present the results using tables and/or figures. Each table/figure should be accompanied by analysis.)
  • Discussion
      •  Implications and Future Research
      • Limitations
  • References

Peer Review Process

All researches submitted to Scholarly Horizon Journal must abide by the scope, and author guidelines of this journal. The submitted manuscripts must tackle scientific merit or novelty appropriate to the focus and scope. The Editor–in–Chief has the right to reject articles that do not meet the theme or the requirements. All manuscripts must rid from plagiarism content. All authors are suggested to use plagiarism detection software to do the similarity checking. Editors check the plagiarism detection of articles in this journal by using Grammarly software.

The manuscript submitted to this journal will be peer–reviewed with double–blind review. Peer Review Statement is ensured by rigorous and integrity, anonymous peer evaluation of each main paper by three independent referees. The reviewers give scientific valuable comments improving the contents of the manuscript.

The final decision of articles acceptance will be made by the Editor, on behalf of the Editorial Board according to the reviewer’s comments. Publication of accepted articles including the sequence of published articles will be made by Editor–in–Chief by considering the sequence of accepted date and geographical distribution of authors as well as a thematic issue.

Review Outcomes: Utilizing feedback from the peer review process, the Editor will make a final publication decision. The review process will take approximately 4 to 10 weeks. Decisions categories include:

  • Reject: Rejected manuscripts will not be published and authors will not have the opportunity to resubmit a revised version of the manuscript to Scholarly Horizon Journal.
  • Resubmit for Review: The submission needs to be re–worked, but with significant changes, may be accepted. However, It will require a second round of review.
  • Accept with Revisions: Manuscripts receiving an accept-pending-revisions decision will be published in Scholarly Horizon Journal under the condition that minor/major modifications are made. Revisions will be reviewed by an editor to ensure necessary updates are made prior to publication.
  • Accept: Accepted manuscripts will be published in the current form with no further modifications required.

After reviewing, all the corresponding information is sent to the author. In one or two weeks, the author finalizes the article and sends the final version of it to the editors’ office. If after this period the article is not returned (or the editorial board is not informed about any delay) – the article is refused.

Qualifications to become Peer Reviewers

  1. Reviewers must be an expert of the field (as determined by the scope of the journal).
  2. Reviewers must be at least Master’s Degree Holder.
  3. Reviewers must have published in a peer-reviewed journal.
  4. Reviewers must abide with the Reviewer’s Responsibilities Statement

  • Reviewer’s name and affiliation will be listed on the Journal’s website.
  • Reviewers get a certificate as Reviewer.
  • Chance to be a keynote or invited speaker in all of NWU’s conferences

Ethics Statement & Publication Malpractice Statement

Scholarly Horizon Journal is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and takes all possible measures against any publication malpractices. The Editorial Board is responsible for, among others, preventing publication malpractice. Unethical behavior is unacceptable and Scholarly Horizon Journal does not tolerate plagiarism in any form. Authors who submitted articles: affirm that manuscript contents are original.
