For Fiscal Manuel Flores Aurelio (ret.), outgoing Dean of the Northwestern University College of Law, that legacy is written not only in the achievements of the college but also in the countless lawyers, judges, prosecutors, educators, and public servants who have been guided by his wisdom, inspired by his integrity, and shaped by his unwavering commitment to the legal profession.

After more than 19 years of dedicated service to Northwestern University, Dean Aurelio now closes a remarkable chapter of leadership that has become inseparable from the story of the university’s College of Law. While he wished for a quiet retirement, those who had the privilege of working with him knew that such a life of service deserved to be celebrated.

As Northwestern University President Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas shared during the tribute held in Dean Aurelio’s honor, “It was not our stubbornness that led us to overturn your veto. Instead, it was your leadership, your mentorship, your friendship, and your fatherly virtue that compelled us to push through with this celebration.” The evening came to life despite the honoree’s humble objections. Dean Aurelio had graciously expressed that he did not want a send-off and simply wished to retire quietly. Yet his colleagues believed otherwise. Inspired by the very leadership, mentorship, friendship, and fatherly guidance that he had generously extended throughout the years, the faculty unanimously chose to honor the man who had devoted so much of himself to the university and to the legal community.

Dean Aurelio’s journey with Northwestern University began as a part-time professor. What started as a commitment to teach eventually became a calling to lead. In June 2007, he accepted the responsibility of serving as associate dean under then-Dean Justice Wenceslao I. Agnir Jr., who aptly described him as “the incorruptible one.” Those words would later prove prophetic as Dean Aurelio assumed the deanship and became one of the college’s strongest pillars of integrity, discipline, and academic excellence.

His leadership was never defined by authority alone. It was defined by character.

Throughout his years as dean, he cultivated a culture in which integrity was never negotiable, professionalism was expected, and excellence was pursued with humility. He reminded students that becoming a lawyer was not merely about passing examinations or earning a title. It was about embracing a lifelong responsibility to uphold justice, protect the truth, and serve the people with honor.
