
NWU Achieves Global Recognition at WURI 2025 in South Korea
Busan, South Korea — Northwestern University (NWU) proudly fielded a strong delegation to the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) 2025, composed of Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas, University President; Prof. Karl Lenin Benigno, Vice President for Administration; Dr. Eric S. Parilla, Vice President for Research, Community, Social Development, and Internationalization; Ms. Beatriz Cravalho, Assistant Vice President for Quality Assurance; Dr. Juan Jobelle Acosta, Principal of the Basic Education Department; Prof. Shiela Navasca, Director of the University Center for Research and Development; Ms. Stephanie Valiente, Officer-in-Charge of the Guidance Center; and Mr. Jezreel Larry R. Caunca, Acting Director of the NWU PhilForesight Institute. Their presence underscored NWU’s united commitment to global collaboration, institutional innovation, and academic excellence on the international stage.
For NWU, WURI 2025 was more than just numbers on a ranking list, it was a story of leadership, resilience, and commitment to students.
Rising in the Global Arena
In this year’s edition, NWU achieved:
- Rank 267 in the Overall WURI Global Ranking
- Rank 3 in Visionary Leadership
- Rank 34 in Student Support and Engagement
- Rank 22 in Crisis Management
These placements highlight NWU’s growth as a university that not only pursues academic excellence but also ensures that its programs resonate with the needs of communities, industries, and most importantly, its students.
Mr. Jezreel Larry R. Caunca, Futures Education Specialist and Acting Director of NWU PhilForesight Institute, presented the university’s award-winning case in the Visionary Leadership category. His presentation showcased how NWU empowers students to think ahead, embrace responsibility, and lead with foresight, earning the university an impressive 3rd place worldwide.
Ms. Stephanie Valiente represented NWU in the Student Support and Engagement category, where the university placed 34th globally. Her presentation highlighted NWU’s inclusive programs that ensure students are not just academically successful but also supported holistically through mentoring, wellness, and engagement initiatives.
On the theme of resilience, Vice President for Administration Prof. Karl Lenin Benigno presented NWU’s case in Crisis Management, which ranked 22nd in the world. His talk centered on the university’s RIDAM Project and other crisis-response innovations that enabled NWU to remain adaptive, resilient, and community-driven in times of uncertainty.
One of the defining moments of the conference was the appointment of Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas, President of Northwestern University, to the Board of Directors of the World University Network of Innovation (WUNI Presidents). This prestigious role places NWU among global leaders in education, strengthening its voice in shaping the future of innovation-driven higher education.
For the Philippines, this milestone is significant, it affirms that universities in the regions, far from traditional centers of power, can be recognized as global leaders.
Beyond its award-winning case entries, NWU also contributed significantly to the intellectual discussions at the conference.
Prof. Shiela Navasca, Director of the University Center for Research and Development, presented a timely study on governance and institutional leadership, enriching the conversation on how universities can adapt structures and policies for long-term resilience.
Dr. Eric S. Parilla, Vice President for Research, Community, Social Development, and Internationalization, delivered two presentations. The first was a research study on the impact of the WURI Rankings on NWU’s internationalization and entrepreneurial education, highlighting how WURI principles are shaping the university’s strategies. The second presentation reflected his role as Guest Editor of the Journal on Mechanism Management, where he explored Artificial Intelligence and Education, stressing both opportunities and ethical responsibilities for universities in the age of AI.
Together, these contributions positioned NWU not only as an institution that excels in practice but also as one that actively shapes global academic thought.
