Literacy

Strengthening our commitment to education, the University initiated programs that develop skills and literacy of learners. These outreach activities in different communities help every citizen realize their potentials, improve communicative proficiencies and other competencies, and understand the quality of life through various socio-cultural and economic aspects of living.

In the pre-pandemic period, the College of Teacher Education (CTE) conducted a community extension entitled “TALIAO” in Brgy. 61 Cataban, Laoag City. The word “taliao” translates to “look back”. Spearheaded by the students and faculty of CTE and Vedasto J. Samonte School of Graduate Studies, this program taught pupils and students the old culture of the Ilocanos such as folk songs, burburtia (riddles) and traditional games that help the new generation reminisce and practice the old custom in Ilocos. Elementary pupils also engaged in the enrichment of their Ilocano vocabulary which is best suited to their subject in the K-12 program, Mother Tongue-based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE).

In the height of pandemic, four CTE students volunteered in the Silid Aralan Inc., a non- governmental organization in the Philippines that educates and empowers struggling learners. It is a program that caters underprivileged and academically-challenged children and youth. Silid Aralan Inc. trains children and youth to have passion for learning and teach them how to learn. Currently, they are teaching learners in Nangka Elementary School, Marikina City. They used a virtual learning wherein they can see each other virtually. They can teach and monitor them outside learning hours of our students so that it will not affect also their studies.
