NWU Participates in 34th National Coastal Cleanup

Volunteers from the Northwestern University community participated in the Science of Identity Foundation’s (SIF) 34th National Coastal Cleanup held last September 21st at Barangay 35, Gabu Sur.

112 people, including members of the local community, collected, weighed, and segregated into several classifications a total of 25 sacks of debris.

The results show an increase in marine pollutants from last year. According to the beneficiaries, most of the wastes were merely carried to their shores from different locations.

The extension program was successful in acquiring and providing data for proper endorsement of coastal cleanup advocacy by SIF. The information will aid future recommendations and further studies for the preservation and improvement of Gabu Sur’s coasts.

Once the analysis is complete, a follow-up activity will be conducted to give feedback to the barangay.

This awareness program is an extension activity of the College of Maritime Education in line with Northwestern’s efforts for environmental protection and conservation.
