NWU joins Earth Hour
With the aim to raise awareness regarding the need to take action on climate change, Northwestern University joined Ilocos Norte Provincial Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Energy and local communities to participate in Earth Hour last March 27 at the 365 Plaza San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte.
Earth Hour is a global event established by World Wildlife Fund and held annually on the last Saturday of March. All households and businesses are asked to turn off their non-essential lights and other electric appliances for one hour (8:30-9:30 p.m.) to raise awareness on climate change.
Turning off unnecessary electrical appliances for one hour minimizes atmospheric carbon emission brought about by coal burning electric generators which triggers global warming, "Michel Calaramo, NWU Ecotourism Park and Botanic Gardens General Manager, said. "With this kind of event, we are showing our concern for mother earth." At 8:30 p.m., Robinsons Mall turned off its symbolic "R" icon to show its participation to the global event. This was followed by the 365 Plaza and other landmarks in the province including the Gilbert Bridge, Sinking Bell Tower, government buildings, and several houses.
The event highlights were the performance of the local rock band Shine Polaris, exhibits on how to minimize the use of electricity in houses, offices and establishments and distribution of fliers regarding energy conservation to participants by the NWU Ecotourism Park and Botanic Gardens employees.
