|NWU-HRM students capture Kusina Ilocandia 2010 Title|
Students from the Hotel and Restaurant Management department showed their culinary brilliance as they gutted out 10 other colleges and universities of Region I to win the over-all student level championship of the Kusina Ilocandia 2010 held at San Juan, La Union last September 15-18, 2010. The culinary competition with the theme, Unwrapping Ilocandia’s Finest in Culinary Expertise and Creativity Towards Global Standard and Competence, was conducted to showcase Ilocano cuisine while displaying skills in presenting dishes in a unique setting.
The individual winners during the regional competition were Rogelio Viscarra Jr., gold medalist in fruit and vegetable carving, Dennis Duldulao, silver medalist in flair tending, Marlon Lumang, bronze medalist in the pasta live making, and Tranz Aira Lei Aguilar, bronze medalist in cocktail mixing and napkin folding.
Princess Ann Justiniano and Jumel Carlo Testado were also crowned Mr. and Ms. Kusina Ilocandia 2010. "I was so elated when I was chosen to represent Northwestern University,” Justiniano said. "We worked as a team throughout the competition and we did our best for NWU." In the group competition, the team of Rogelio Vizcarra, Jr., Helena Victoria Gamiao and Ethel Ruby Bueno bagged the silver medal in themed dining set-up, and the team of Charles Owen Balete, Marlon Lumang, and Joanna Marie Rivera grabbed the bronze medal in wedding cake decoration. The team of Keith Mcrine Lomboy, Emmanuel Macalipis and Jay Roullen Bolusan garnered the 2nd place in the Culinary Quiz Bee while ranked 3rd in waiter’s relay match were the duo of Darwin Valiente and Kendrich Lazo.
Kerwin Bareng, co-adviser of the participants, said "All I can say is that we aimed to win in every event of the competition. Our students were cooperative and performed their job well. They were prepared."
