College of Business Education

History

The year 1950 witnessed the dawning of the College of Business Education (COBE). Its first course offering was Bachelor of Science in Commerce (BSC) majors in Accounting and Banking and Finance.

The College which was then known as the Commerce department opened a one year secretarial course leading to Certificate of Secretarial Science (CSS) which was granted government recognition in 1959. Towards the end of the 70’s, two-year Junior Secretarial Course (JSC) was offered and granted government recognition in 1982. Both Secretarial courses were however, replaced in 1989 by a two year Computer Secretarial course which got official recognition a year later.

Management as a major field was also added to the initial major offerings under the BSC curriculum.

One of the most remarkable events during the 90s was the separation of Accounting from the BSC Curriculum. A new program, Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) was subsequently recognized in 1990.

The BSC program, one of the six programs voluntarily applied for accreditation, was granted Level I status on March 15, 1990. On September 21 the following year, it was granted Level II status.

A four-year course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Secretarial Administration was opened in 1992 and was granted government recognition in 1995. The following year, Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management and Bachelor of Science in Tourism were also opened. Both programs were recognized in 1995.
