Northwestern University Parades through Laoag Streets

In celebration of NWU’s 88th Foundation Anniversary, NWU administrators, employees, students, together with the candidates and winners of Mr. and Miss Northwestern University 2020, and other guests lined the streets of Laoag City last Friday, January 31, 2020. The said parade is a part of the city’s Pamulinawen Festival as well.

The different departments of the university exhibited their floats themed “NWU Goes International” during the activity. The parade was accompanied by the NWU Marching Band, NWU Tamboreros, and NWU Drum and Lyre Corps. Guest participants included Buttong Elementary School Drum and Lyre Corps, Cabeza Elementary School Drum and Lyre Corps, Gabaldon Elementary School Drum and Lyre Corps, Holy Spirit Academy of Laoag Drum and Lyre Corps, Ilocos Norte National High School Tamboreros, and Laoag Central Elementary School Drum and Lyre Corps.

After the parade, participants gathered at the Aurora Park to witness the awarding of SalTuKan (Salsala, Tuktukar, Kankanta), Spoken Word Poetry, Color Fun Run, and Best Float. The winners are:

Salsala:
First Place – College of Maritime Education
Second Place – Senior High School
Third Place – College of Allied Health Sciences

Tuktukar:
First Place – College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology
Second Place – College of Maritime Education
Third Place – College of Criminal Justice Education

Spoken Word Poetry:
First Place – College of Allied Health Sciences
Second Place – College of Teacher Education
Third Place – Senior High School

Color Fun Run:
First Place – Raymart Pasion, College of Criminal Justice Education
Second Place – Jaymard Kimi, College of Maritime Education

Best Float:
Champion – Basic Education Department
First Runner-up – Senior High School
Second Runner-up – Vedasto J. Samonte School of Graduate Studies

The activity ended with glee, as participants danced in solidarity to the song “Shine Your Way.”
