Atty. Vincent Frederick Layugan Dancel speaks to class of 2019 during the NWU 87th Commencement Exercises

Guest of honor and speaker Atty. Vincent Frederick L. Dancel delivered his speech during the 87th Commencement Exercises at Northwestern University, empowering the class of 2019—composed of 651 students, including 8 graduates from ETEEAP (Expanded Tertiary Educational Equivalency Accreditation Program)—on June 1.

A graduate with the degree of BS Legal Management in 1992, Dancel then finished Law School in 1997 at St. Louis University, Baguio City. He is also a musician, composer and human rights advocate.

He became the CEO of Guilty Pleasure Records, an independent record label that championed creative control and intellectual property rights of artists, and produced albums for Cambio, Imago, Fatal Posporos and Twisted Halo. He organized, composed, and was the vocalist for Peryodiko in 2007, an alternative rock band that served as a commentary on social issues and concerns.

Recently, he joined Globe Telecom as director of Corporate and Legal Services Group of the Law and Compliance Division. “Fail fast, learn and get up,” he said. Meaningful words that encouraged the heart of every graduate to continue fulfilling their dreams.

“Failure is the new success.”

“Fly like an eagle, forget about the turkeys that bring you down,” he remarked. “We must release ourselves from anything that weighs us down, [and] make them our inspiration to soar high.”
